Little Alchemy 2 is a crafting puzzle from Recloak, the small studio behind the original Little Alchemy. You begin with four elements — air, earth, fire and water — and build everything else by mixing them. Two elements that make something together turn into a new item, which joins your library and can be mixed again. The build on this page holds 720 elements, from mud and steam up to life, humans, time and the universe.

It is a calm game to keep on a second screen. There are no levels, no timer and no way to lose a run: a pair that does nothing simply sits on the board. That makes it an odd but welcome neighbour on a site about smashing a car through zombies, and a good choice when you want something to think about rather than react to.

How to play

The library sits along the side of the screen and lists every element you have found so far. Drag one onto the empty workspace, then drag a second element on top of it. If the pair is a real recipe, both pieces fuse into the result and the new item gets a short, often silly caption the first time you make it. If nothing happens, the two pieces stay where they are and you can try something else.

  • Drag from the library to the workspace to place an element; drag one placed element onto another to mix them.
  • An element you mix keeps its place in the library, so you never run out of air or water.
  • The workspace gets busy fast. Clear it whenever it fills up — your discoveries are not lost, only the copies on the board.
  • Search the library by name once it grows past a few dozen items.

Hints, the encyclopedia and finished elements

When you are stuck, the hint button points you at a combination you have not tried yet. Hints are limited; this build can top them up by watching a short video, and it tells you when no video is available or when an ad blocker stops one from loading. The encyclopedia keeps every item you have discovered with its description, which is the easiest way to look back over what you have.

The game also tracks two kinds of dead ends for you. A final element cannot be combined into anything else, and an element is exhausted once you have found every recipe it is part of. Both are marked, so you can stop wasting drags on them and focus on the items that still have something to give.

Tips for the first hour

  1. Mix each starting element with itself before anything else. Several early recipes are doubles, and they open up the second ring of items quickly.
  2. Think in categories. Weather, land, living things and tools each grow out of a few key items; when one category stalls, switch to another.
  3. Combine new items with the four basics first. Fire, water, earth and air turn up in a large share of recipes.
  4. Save hints for real dead ends. An exhausted marker already tells you when an element has nothing left.
  5. Read the captions. They are jokes, but they often hint at what the item leads to next.

Saving and sound

Progress is kept by the game itself, so a refresh does not wipe your library on the same browser. The settings menu has separate switches for music and sound effects, which helps if you are playing in a quiet room. On touch screens the same drag-and-drop works with a finger.

Questions about Little Alchemy 2

Is Little Alchemy 2 unblocked at school?

Little Alchemy 2 runs in an ordinary browser tab from earntodie.org, with nothing to download or install, so it plays on most school Chromebooks and work computers. If a network filter blocks the site, only that network's administrator can change it.

How many elements are in Little Alchemy 2?

This build has 720 elements. You start with four (air, earth, fire and water) and make every other one by mixing pairs.

What does it mean when an element is final or exhausted?

A final element cannot be combined into anything else. An exhausted element is one whose recipes you have all found already. The game marks both so you can skip them.

Can I lose progress in Little Alchemy 2?

No. There is no timer and no failed state, and the game saves your library, so a wrong mix just leaves the two pieces on the board.
