Fireboy & Watergirl: Forest Temple is not a runner at all, whatever the shelf it sits on says. It is a two-character puzzle platformer set inside a stone temple, where you guide a fire elemental and a water elemental to their exit doors in the same level. Neither can finish alone, so every room becomes a small problem of who goes first and who waits.

A session is a string of short rooms. You hop across ledges, collect gems, press buttons, pull levers and shove blocks, then walk both characters through their own doors. It is calmer than the crash-and-climb pace of Earn to Die, but it has the same "one more try" pull: a mistake costs you seconds, and the retry is instant.

It plays well if you came to this site for the zombie-car games and want a break that needs your brain more than your reflexes. Everything runs in the browser, nothing to install.

How to play

The two characters are controlled separately. In the classic setup Fireboy uses the arrow keys (up to jump, left and right to move) and Watergirl uses W, A and D. That split is what makes it a natural two-player game on one keyboard. Playing alone, you switch your attention between the pair, moving one into position and then the other.

The key rule is the liquids. Fireboy can wade through lava but dies in water; Watergirl can cross water but dies in lava. The green goo pools are deadly to both. Each character collects gems of their own colour, red for Fireboy and blue for Watergirl, and the two exit doors, one per character, only count when both are standing in them.

Levers, pressure plates and buttons open gates elsewhere in the room, and some of them only stay open while someone stands on the plate. That is usually the puzzle: one character holds a switch so the other can pass, then the roles may flip a few seconds later.

Tips

• Look at the whole room before moving. Find both doors and every hazard first, then plan the order.
• If a gate closes when you step off a plate, the character on it is your anchor. Send the other one through first.
• Pushable blocks can bridge gaps or hold down plates, so do not drag them to a corner you cannot get them out of.
• Gems are optional for finishing but are the real challenge for a clean run, so grab them on the way rather than doubling back.
